Travel & Logistics

We’re so excited to see you in Japan! As part of your travel planning, we recommend that you purchase travel insurance that covers your booking for unforeseen events and interruptions of your trip. We also suggest purchasing refundable fights or flight protection.

Arrival in Tokyo

Tokyo is Japan’s busy capital, located at the head of Tokyo Bay on the Pacific coast of central Honshu. Be sure to set your clocks—in Japan, you’re on Japan Standard Time, which for most of the year is +16 hours ahead of Pacific Time, and +9 hours ahead of GMT / UTC.

Trip Start

We will meet at 9am on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at the Park Hyatt in Tokyo, Japan.

Arrival Airport

The best airports to fly into are the Haneda Airport (HND), about a 20-minute drive from our Tokyo hotel; or Narita International Airport (NRT), a 60-minute drive from the hotel. Direct flights to both Haneda and Narita are available from major US cities, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Dallas. Flight times are roughly 12-14 hours.

We recommend arriving at least one full day prior to the start of your trip in the case of unforeseen circumstances or travel delays. You will most likely start your travel two days ahead of our start date, to account for the time difference. For information on where to stay the night before, see the following Pre-Arrival Accommodations section.

Transfer from Airport

Private transportation is available from Haneda and Narita airports to our hotel through the concierge at the Park Hyatt Tokyo to be requested, no more than 30 days ahead of your arrival. Contact Park Hyatt Toyko’s concierge desk directly to arrange. Alternatively, you can arrange your own taxi or train upon arrival at either airport.

From HND Airport

The cost of a taxi from HND airport to the center of Tokyo is around 5,000 yen (US$47) during the day and 7,000 yen (US$65)during the night (10pm-5am). To get a fixed rate (recommended), reserve your taxi at one of the official taxi ranks at Haneda airport when you land. The journey should take roughly 20-30 minutes to the city center.

You can also take the train from HND Airport to the city center. The Keikyu Railway train takes just 13 minutes to reach Shinagawa Station in Tokyo and costs around 410 yen one-way. You can also take the Tokyo Monorail, which leaves every 5 minutes from Haneda airport, takes just 13 minutes and costs around 490 yen.

From NRT Airport

Narita airport is located about 50 miles from downtown Tokyo and a standard taxi from Narita airport is usually well over 20,000 yen (US$190). If flying into Narita, we recommend taking the Narita Express train instead. The fare is usually around 3,000 yen and the journey takes about 55 minutes.

Pre-Arrival Accommodations

We stay in unique, in-demand hotels on this trip—rooms go fast and daily rates change frequently. If you plan to arrive in Tokyo prior to the beginning of our journey, we recommend staying at Park Hyatt Tokyo (see Our Accommodations section), which is also our meeting spot on day one. Please contact the hotel directly to book, and let them know you will be on a trip with Modern Adventure and would like to extend your stay prior to the trip start. We will try to avoid unnecessary room changes, allowing you to stay in the same room from start to finish—however, please note that this is not always an option and room types vary and are subject to change.

We also recommend the Hyatt Centric Ginza Tokyo, nestled in the Ginza District and close to famous shopping, dining and entertainment. Steps away are incredible department stores, boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, night clubs and cafes.

Departure from Kyoto

We end our trip—after nine days of exploration, connection, and delicious food and drink!—at the Park Hyatt Kyoto on Wednesday, November 17, 2021.

Departure Airport

We recommend booking your outbound flights from Kansai International Airport (KIX), a 75-minute drive from our hotel in Kyoto. This is a different airport from the one we begin at, so make sure to book your outbound flights accordingly.

A smaller, regional airport, Osaka International Airport (ITM) is a 45-minute drive from our hotel and may be a good option if you are traveling domestically within Japan, or locally within Asia. You can also take the train back to Tokyo or onward within Japan.

Transfer to Airport

After the breakfast on our last day, Modern Adventure will provide a complimentary transfer to KIX airport. If you would like to join this transfer, your flight home should depart from KIX at 2pm or later.

Please note: If you book a flight that leaves earlier than 2pm, or if you are planning on departing from ITM or if you are planning on extending your time in Japan, it is your responsibility to arrange alternative transportation from the Park Hyatt Kyoto to the airport. Your trip leader can assist you with this as your taxi will need to be confirmed at least 5 days in advance. Let them know you are traveling with Modern Adventure.

Post-Trip Accommodations

We hope you have the opportunity to extend your stay in Japan. If so, we recommend staying at Park Hyatt Kyoto (see Our Accommodations section). Please note that any post-trip accommodations are your responsibility to book, and reservations can be made directly by contacting the Park Hyatt Kyoto.

If the Park Hyatt Kyoto is full, consider staying at Hotel Kanra Kyoto. This modern, stylish hotel aims to provide uniquely sophisticated service of Ryokans to each and every guest. Decorated with minimal touches and alluring scents of Kyoto, each room immerses you in warmth and rejuvenation.
